{November 16, 2005}   Denim Dominates

Fashion can be overpowering at times, causing nothing but distraction..all the do’s and don’ts, the varying trends from city to city (let alone across the countries), and the ‘in’ colors that just loathe your skin tone. So let’s bring it back to basics and build from there. I have formulated a guide to make this season’s looks affordable and more importantly, wearable. We’ll work with what you have and add some of this season’s hottest trends making the most basic wardrobe fresh.

Jeans are a staple in every woman’s closet. I for one can hardly count how many pairs make up my collection, yet I constantly find myself looking for my next pair. Some confess to having a shoe-fetish, but I am certainly a jean-junkie. So I find ways to work in some fall trends in order to keep each pair of dirty denims looking new and fashion forward.

Capri Jeans
Cropped jeans are the perfect compromise between summer and fall. They were wearable in the summer heat and got me off the hook with the daisy-duke trend (thanks alot Jessica Simpson). But this fall season, capri jeans are worn with knee-high boots, creating an edgy look and giving you another opportunity to show off those favorite boots of yours. Whether they’re cuffed, drawstring or cut with a dull scissor, capri jeans are an easy way to look fresh this fall.

Over-Accessorize
When you over accessorize, it only works when you down-play the rest of the outfit. Jeans work best because it still has the effortless undertone instead of the over-dressed-for-the-occasion look. If you throw on your favorite fitting jeans and a white tank it gives you a blank canvas to work with. So don’t hesitate to layer on the jewelry. Chunky earrings, long necklaces and a simple bangle. In this case the accessories aren’t just the accent they’re the outfit.

Rock-in-Roll Ripped Jeans
The term is ‘distressed’ the look is old, worn-in, and truly-loved..as if these jeans had been with you since the beginning. But be sure not to wear them with an equally ‘old’ tshirt since that’s just sloppy and people may start handing you their spare change. Instead wear them with a racer-back tank or feminine halter paired with a fitted blazer.

Pair a Sexy Lingerie Top with Jeans
Another perfect marriage. The silky fabric edged with lace which was once only meant for the bedroom, looks hot with a great pair of jeans. The contrasting fabrics balance one another. And since you’re wearing the oh-so-romantic cami with jeans, it looks sexy rather than X-rated.

{November 09, 2005}   Guilty Pleasure of the Day…Cavalli Mermaid Skirt

I came across this Roberto Cavalli mermaid skirt today..and all I can say is..wow!. I am truly in amazement and having a difficult time turning my eyes away from it. Italian designer, Cavalli certainly knows how to complement a woman’s form. This gorgeous mermaid cut skirt has a black background and a multicolor floral pattern.

The mermaid style, notoriously known for making a woman appear shapely, hugs the curves of her hips and thighs, then flares out at the knees, creating an hour glass contour on the lower portion of her body. And we know that a woman’s sex appeal lies in her curves. So for someone who strives for sexiness without showing a lot of skin, this classy Cavalli skirt is utter perfection. (And if it weren’t $955, I’d be shopping right now..)

{November 08, 2005}   She’s Back in Action!

Kate’s back and apparently in high demand! Italian designer, Robert Cavalli didn’t waste any time, signing Kate Moss as the featured model for his 2006 spring collection. With her name plastered in the media, and the constant speculation from her recent cocaine scandal, Kate is the topic of all conversation. So of course she is a hot commodity.

After a month’s stay, Ms. Moss recently checked out of a drug rehab in Arizona. Leaving the past behind her, Kate left the clinic eager to get her career back on track. She has already been offered several contracts and has been flying to various shoots in New York, Los Angeles and around Europe.

Roberto Cavalli made a wise choice to sign her and explains,” I chose Kate as a mark of my affection for a person who has always shown great professionalism,” (not to mention that it was an insightful business decision on his part).

This shot is a preview of the Cavalli spread for his 2006 Spring collection taken on a picturesque beach in Ibiza, off the coast of Spain.

{November 02, 2005}   Giving Credit where Credit is Due

I’m not even going to get into the controversy of whether or not major designer names should break contracts with Kate Moss because she was caught with coke. True fans of Kate do not question her morals when it comes to her photo spreads. Her image and her name are iconic. And these in my mind, did not come crashing down when the tabloids released her damning candid. But what I would like to comment on is the model that will be her so-called replacement.

It has been announced that Swedish clothing chain Hennes & Mauritz (aka the infamous H&M) will use Italian model Mariacarla Boscono to help launch a new Stella McCartney collection, replacing Kate Moss, who was dropped after reports of her cocaine habit.

Please don’t misunderstand; I think Mariacarla Boscono is a beautifully sassy woman, with very similar features to Kate Moss, in which case I understand why she is a suitable replacement. However, may I set the record straight here and state that Mariacarla would have never had the opportunities she has if it were not for Kate Moss.

Kate Moss burst into the competitive world of modeling in the early 90’s. Her competition included Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Niki Taylor. All typically gorgeous, with flawless features, unfathomable height and perfect proportions. Kate on the other hand, lacked curves, was a mere 5′7″ with pointy teeth and stringy hair. She was not by any means the mainstream sexy but instead she was awkwardly unique and sauntered her way into the hearts of people from around the globe. She was the Twiggy of the nineties changing the look of models for years to come.

Kate was edgy and gripping because she could transform from an ethereal-looking angel to a hard-core rock star with a single expression. Her black and white Calvin Klein ads were mostly nude, with barely-there makeup and chapped lips often paired with a washed-up guy covered in tattoos. They were brilliant. This look spawned a shift in the fashion world away from the painted glamour and towards artistically raw photography.

And let’s get real for a moment…it was Kate’s druggie-look that electrified the era. Kate’s bony frame coined the term “waif” which spread like wildfire. And her style and attitude apparent in every pose were described as being “heroin chic.” It was Kate that opened the door for every model that possessed questionable beauty. So although Mariacarla Boscono does have delicate features with a dark side, she is a role model of Kate Moss…not a replacement.
